GLOSSARY

BIOAVAILABILITY: The amount of the substance that is absorbed by the body’s circulatory system, thus producing the active effect(s).

CANNABINOID: Arguably the source of your buzz, folks! Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that are produced by both the cannabis plant (‘phytocannabinoids’) as well as within the human body (‘endocannabinoids’) and interact with the body’s cannabinoid receptors.

CANNABIDIOL (CBD): Potentially the most popular but misunderstood term of recent years! Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant and following tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is the second most common cannabinoid present in cannabis cultivars. Through ongoing research and study, it has been determined that CBD is non-intoxicating and thus provides different potential effects than THC, including reduction in pain, anxiety, inflammation and seizure-frequency.

ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (ECS): AKA the source of cannabis magic! But seriously though, to apply the wonders of science for a sec, here’s the breakdown:
    1. Humans have an ECS system which is responsible for all sorts of things, but in essence, to regulate and ensure the body is internally balanced in function.
    2. Endocannabinoids are the dynamic, naturally occurring cellular molecules in your system that bind with different cannabinoid receptors that cause your body to feel certain ways. This impacts how important bodily processes function, such as the immune, digestive and nervous systems.
    3. As another living, breathing organism, cannabis also contains its version of cannabinoids, which are called ‘phytocannabinoids’, and the two you are likely most familiar with are THC and CBD.
    4. When you ingest cannabis, these cannabinoids interact with the receptors in an individual’s ECS system and voila, that’s how the effects are produced! Learn more here

ENTOURAGE EFFECT: The effects of all of the cannabis compounds, together. Meaning, instead of focusing on the outcomes of one specific compound in isolation (say, CBD), the entourage effect suggests that the combined effect of cannabis compounds (i.e. cannabinoids, terpenes) produces a more significant and therapeutic response for the consumer. Through the wonders of ~synergy~, these compounds work together to modulate the overall psychoactive effects of the plant, predominantly influenced by the potency of THC.

GRINDER: A common and handy tool for cannabis users, which allows a clean and easy way to grind and break down dried cannabis flower to roll into joints or pack into bowls of a pipe. We must say, ours are gorgeous and multifaceted, check them out here.

HEMP: Hemp is a variety of Cannabis Sativa that contains low concentrations of THC and offers a myriad of uses, particularly as a source of fibre for fabric, rope and paper. Learn more about hemp here and check out Sackville & Co.’s unbleached hemp rolling papers!

HYBRID: A term used to describe cannabis cultivars that have been cross-bred to combine desirable features from two parent plants.

INDICA: Looking to wind down? Indica is a term used to describe cannabis cultivars that are known for more sedative, relaxing and ‘heady’ effects. In comparison to Sativa cultivars, Indica plants are typically smaller with broader leaves and offer shorter flowering cycles. They are well-adapted to cooler climates with a shorter growing season.

SATIVA: Looking for a little boost? Sativa is a term used to describe cannabis cultivars that are known for more stimulating, energizing effects. In comparison to Indica cultivars, Sativa plants are typically taller with narrow leaves and have longer flowering cycles. They are well-adapted to warm climates that offer a longer growing season.

TERPENE: The organic compounds in cannabis responsible for producing a cultivar’s aroma and flavour. Recent research is indicating that terpenes also contribute to the overall potential effects of the plant. Learn more about terps here.

TETRAHYDROCANNABINOL (THC): Potentially the most familiar term in this list! Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of over 100 chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant and is the most common cannabinoid present in cannabis cultivars. Historically, THC is known for producing the more intoxicating and psychological ‘stoner-high’, associated with mild euphoria and sedation.
